Don't be fooled by the neighbourhood that Mama Alfa's is nestled in, it's a wonderful restaurant with delicious food and an inordinate amount of family friendly warmth - worth the drive! Mama is a wonderful woman who genuinely cares about your dining experience. The food is made from scratch and absolutely lovely. Thank you mama for a wonderful night!
Mama Alfa's is my all time favorite restaurant. I have never eaten better. Mama Alfa makes everything by hand just as she cooks at home! My favorite meal would be a risotto dish, wedding soup, caesar salad and tiramisu for dessert accompanied with a wine from a great wine selection.
Aside from the food, Mama Alfa and her husband Ralph's warm personalities are overwhelming. They really want to meet their customers and visit with you. They have instilled this warmth into all of their staff as well. I eventually got to know all of the staff on a first name basis! This is not your everyday dining experience.
I've since moved from Thunder Bay but I really miss Ralph's stories and Mama Alfa's chats and hugs.
Being visitors to Thunderbay from London Ontario, this was our first visit to Mama Alfa's as recommended by Father Al. Mama & Papa Alfa welcomed us with open arms. Although we had not ordered our pasta meal 2 days in advance, Mama Alfa was able to prepare 2-Gnocchi, 1 Pasta Fagoli & 1 Rigatoni. In our conversation she learned we knew Father Al & this was our first visit, so she prepared a free Caesar salad for us. It was a fantastic Caesar salad. During our meal Mama Alfa personally came back to see how we were enjoying our meal. We had nothing but good things to say about the meal. The pasta dishes were EXCELLENT. Mama Alfa also brought out extra Gnocchi & Pasta Fagoli for us to sample. She took photos for us & we were honoured to have a photo of her with our Italian buddy Vince. Truly a scrumptuous meal accompanied by the nicest & kindest people you could ever meet: Mama & Papa Alfa.
Our first time in Thunder Bay on a trip around Lake Superior we were told by someone in our hotel to try Mama Alfa's for something different & we were not disappointed. It was the best dining experience we had on our whole trip! It sounds cliche to call it an experience but there is no other way to describe it. Alfa was so friendly & the atmosphere so cozy. And the food! I swear this must be where Caesar salad was invented. Perfectly seasoned, fresh & tasty. We will tell the world!
After reading about the brilliant restaurant that Mama Alfa's is, I had to try it for myself to see if it did infact live up to all the hype. It did, and then some!
The evening began with us being seated right away as we walked in, by no other than Mama Alfa herself. She is a very warm and inviting woman to say the least! You truly do feel as though you are sitting down at your own dining room table.
The atmosphere was very appealing, with subtle background music, tasteful paintings decorating the walls, and the perfect amount of light to enjoy your meal.
Mama Alfa even stood with us as we sat down and had a brief chat with us, which was very nice. In our conversation she had learned this was our first time we were visiting the restaurant, so out of a true act of kindness she brought us a free caesar salad on the house.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is without a doubt the best caesar salad I have ever tasted in my life. The flavour is just bursting with each bite, but not overpowering by any means - the perfect combination of ingredients.
The garlic toast with mozzerella cheese certainly did not let us down neither! You could certainly see the care and preparation put into it. The taste was wonderful, with the bread having its own unique flavour, and the real mozzerella cheese adding another delicious taste.
All throughout our meal Mama Alfa personally came back to see how we were enjoying our meal - no complaints at all! The Hawaiian pizza arrived after our appetizer was finished, and once again, I was not let down. The pizza had a beautiful tasting crust (perhaps the best I have ever tasted), and each piece had the right amount of toppings on each for a great tasting experience.
All in all, a great dining experience, and I will surely return again after being treated as kindly as we were. You feel as though you are part of her family once you step into her restaurant. I highly recommend this place to anyone in Thunder Bay, as you will not be disappointed. Mama Alfa's is in a league all on its own!
