Karma's Cafe is one of our favourite restaurants, the food is interesting and tasty. Karma is an amazing cook and really nice person. Service is inconsistent though, have to seat yourself, not always greeted, and sometimes just not great service.
But the food is fantastic so it's worth it for us!

We had heard so much about this place, and how it was on Restaurant Makeover. Was? Will be? We couldn't tell! My partner, being a contractor, picked out every little thing that was wrong from where we were sitting in about 5 mins.
In any case, the minute details of the decor wasnt' at all the problem. Although it was a busy Saturday night, we arrived at 7:30 and were able to get a table as we walked in the door. We sat, totally unnoticed for about 10 minutes (inexcusable too, as there were tables being served all around us), at which time I went up to the bar to retrieve our own menus. We sat for another 15 minutes while waiting for our phantom waitress to come and take our drink orders. After that, things started rolling, and we received our food as promptly as possible after ordering.
As an ex-waitress, I completely understand what a chaotic, busy night is like. BUT, there is no excuse for ignoring customers whilst everyone around them receives service. We didn't even get a "Welcome, we'll be with you shortly" line.
I'm giving Karma another chance, because everyone else in the place seemed to be having a great time, and the food was excellent.

We were neglected from the moment we stepped inside the door.
The server was turning away guests due to 'kitchen problems', although the place was practically empty.
After waiting too long to give our drink orders, and then waiting again too long to have them served, we chose to dine elsewhere.
Not a good experience after travelling from Oshawa, especially considering the 'renos', which, by the way, were not too impressive.

We enjoyed it very, very much!! Food and service is excellent. Worth the trip from Oshawa. Owner was as nice in person as he appeared on the tv show Restaurant Makeover.
