We decided to try Waldos for valentines dinner and was pleasantly surprised. My wife and I selected from the set menu and chose the steak. The appetizers were great, baked brie, smoked salmon salad and lobster bisque were all very nice. Our meal arrived and was cooked to perfection. The steak was exactly as we asked, asparagus was cooked perfectly as were the roasted potatoes. As our meal was to be followed by attending a play at the Grand Theatre, our time was limited. Joe, our server, was a great representative of the restaurant and ensured that we were served in a timely fashion. Time ran short and since we could not take the set dessert with us... Joe arranged for us to have a different dessert to take with us. Joe was a great guy who helped make the evening a success. The only suggestion would be for the restaurant to have complimentary roses for all the ladies in attendance. We will certainly return again soon.
Took my sister here last night for dinner to celebrate her birthday. She is from out of town and I myself am new to the city of London, so haven't had the opportunity to get out much as yet. Read some good reviews about this place and decided to try it out. An excellent experience all around - the front of house staff and our server were wonderfully attentive and friendly without being overbearing, and the food was really excellent. They even brought out a special dessert for my sister with a sparkler in it to make it special for her birthday. I would definitely highly recommend this place, and plan to return at my next opportunity. Oh, and the waiters are cute, too ;)
Tried Waldos for Londonliscious ands we were impressed overall. The appetizers were very good, especially the baked brie in filo pastry! Loved the soup as well. The choose-your-own pasta bar is a great idea...they give you a check-list and off you go! My guest loved her selection. I ordered the pork medallions in a wine sauce. The pork was overcooked (I noticed them pre-preparing it in the open kitchen and leaving the cutlets sitting under the salamader, so that's not good) but the sauce and the perfectly cooked veggies made up for it a bit. Found the dining room table arrangement to be too crowded - we enjoyed our neighbour's conversation too much!
We tried Waldos last night because it's almost a London landmark and we haven't been in years. The highlights included great service, a modern, casual upscale environment and a great wine list. Our experience was excellent until the food arrived. Unfortunately, Waldo's lacks kitchen talent. The meal wasn't bad, but wasn't even close the professionally prepared dish we expected. We ordered their special, a rib eye steak dinner, but found the steak was cut too thin, was tough and over cooked. The potatoes were deep fried wedgies which seemed inappropriate for an upscale bistro. The presentation was okay, but not special in any way. The dish was what we'd expect at Kelsey's or Jack Astor's but our expectations for Waldo's was much more. Firing the chef (cook?) would seem a simple fix. Waldo's could and should be a great venue!
I decided to give Waldo's a second chance, after vowing never to return last time I was there. Bad decision. The butternut squash ravioli was made with gluey pasta around very little squash, in a big soupy, bland sauce, at lukewarm temperature. The desert, a chocolate/pecan tart of some sort was inedible. The restaurant, with it's concrete floor and no soft surfaces to be found, was too noisy and echo-y to carry on a conversation. This time I mean it ... I will never go back.
It had been about 8 months since we last visited, and were pleasantly surprised that there were a whole bunch of new options on the menu. We shared 3 dishes; We were amazed when the kitchen split every dish into a half portion, rather than giving us side plates to use...above and beyond! The poutine was very good: the fries were fine (nothing special), but the beef and sauce were incredible. The tomato and goat cheese stack is always fantastic, and the crepe was perfect, with a nice cream sauce. Despite all of the new additions to the London restaurant scene, Waldo's continues to put out some great dishes that are almost always perfectly prepared.
This is a prime location but the food was, unfortunately, unremarkable. The services were professional and appreciable, and the decor created a satisfactory atmosphere.
In the spirit of trying new places we decided to go to Waldos. We were immediately seated at a booth with cold glasses of waters waiting for us. Water is essential to a meal and the fact that they were waiting at the ready was very impressive. Our waiter was friendly and helpful with his advice on what to order. Our appetizers came very quickly and were all delicious. Grilled calamari, escargots and caesar salad. Our mains were also served very quickly and were cooked to perfection. My lamb-chops were sublime and cooked medium rare through and through. A couple of beers later and we are having a great time eating and talking. The atmosphere is great and not too dark which some fancier restaurants like, while I prefer to see what I am eating.
We've been to Waldos many times, and always go knowing that there we'll have a consistently high quality meal. For the first time last night, we had a sub-standard experience. The first impression of the evening was our server tried to up-sell us on the wine list. The tuna appetizer was a great start to the meal. However, the seafood stack was sub-par compared with previous time I've had it. Both the scallops and shrimp were over-cooked: The scallops were burnt on the outside, and the shrimp had a rubbery texture. It seemed as if they knew this and tried to cover it up by smothering the dish in the cream sauce.
We had a fun and romantic evening at Waldo's. After walking by this restaurant every day, to and from work, I decided to give it a try! We went on a night they had a guest chef, Steve James. He was featuring local food in all the dishes-the flavours were unique and the portions were the right size for our three course meal. We both loved the whole dining experience.
I visited this restaurant during the summer and I enjoyed it. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the view. We were immediately served free bread and spreads/oil. These were tasty. I ordered a soup, but I think it was a day's special and I can't find it on the menu anymore. But it was also very tasty! I ordered the butternut squash ravioli and it was great also. Oh, AND I had creme brulee for the first time here. I am now obsessed. The service was very good, the servers very personable. I enjoy that they offer to customize your meal for you. It makes you feel like you aren't imposing if you make any requests (good for vegetarians such as myself).
Despite a bad snow storm, Waldos was bustling on this Saturday night. The noise level was high enough to give the place a fun feel, but not so high that we couldn't hold a conversation. Our waiter (the tall man), who we've had before, was of high quality. The Caesar Salad was great as usual, and the Tomato and Goat cheese stack got rave reviews. Our mains (butternut squash ravioli, sirloin and seafood stack) were definitely the highly. If you ever want to know the difference properly prepared scallops and shrimp, have them here at Waldos. No rubbery texture at all, just melt-in-your mouth goodness. In my experience, Waldo's has always been consistently great, which separates it from lots of other places in town.
The Eggs were awesome as anyplace that knows how to make Eggs Benedict. They were very good, but not memerable. The Ham and cheese was good but we have made better ones at home. We will and have returned to this restaurant because of the atmostphere and the convinence of beening at the market. Definentally worth eating at, but make your own decisions.
I took these people for dinner to Waldo's because I knew I would be pleased with the evening. Every dish I have tried has been delicious and cooked to perfection. I went with my parents another time and then too the meals were fabulous. Such great food and great mood that I can't wait to find another guest to take!
My god, this place sucks hey. I brought a friend from Australia and felt so embarrassed. Is it design by number or something? I felt like I was in the 80's and that was even before we looked at the menu. Caesar salad, baked brie, "pasta bar", now I knew I was in the 80's. After seeing Mark smoking on the patio it is my advice to stay away to any a la Mark dishes....
Overall the food was good, but not outstanding. The portions were quite small, but this was not reflected in the price. Several of menu items we ordered were out, and the first several wines we ordered were also out of stock. The waitress said I look like a person that eats a lot, and like someone that drinks a lot.
We have been dining at Waldos for years, first on Richmond Street and now Waldos on King. The food is always perfect. The servers are always attentive, but non-intrusive. It is one of the last places in London where one can be guaranteed a wonderful meal any day of the week. Thank you, Mark and Joe.
We eat here often, sometimes as a couple, sometimes as a group. Large selections of wine by the glass, fast luncheon service, warm staff. Allergies and special requests are handled deftly. Patio in the summer.
Great food; swordfish was exceptional, goat cheese is always fresh and warm, steak cooked the way we ordered.. Waiter always more than happy to substitute specific parts of the meal which is very important because I have many dietary restrictions. Food always comes promptly. Service is good despite what that one dude says.
My daughter and I had tickets to see Mama Mia, being new to London, (we’ve been here for 4 months) we weren’t sure where to eat. I saw that Waldo’s was next to the John Labbat Centre, so we decided to try it. I’m so glad I did what a fantastic experience. We walked in, even though we didn’t have reservations, we were seated immediately. Being from Toronto, I’m accustomed to a certain type of service. Waldo’s exceeded my expectation. We had a wonderful waitress named Stephanie, it was her first night there, you would have never known it from the great service. The food was very tasty, I will definitely go back there again.
