The historic fishing village of Steveston, B.C. is home to quaint shops, cozy coffee houses and acclaimed restaurants. However, at the beginning of 2016, locals felt the area was sorely lacking a solid neighbourhood brewpub. That all changed when Britannia Brewing Co. opened its doors in August of 2016.
Opened by friends and partners Trystam Hayden, Kyle Brailean and Lloyd Kinney, Britannia Brewing Co. has found its rightful place in Steveston. “Back home in Australia, my family owns the country's oldest brewery, The Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel,” says Trystam. “I worked in the family business and I always loved it.”
Trystam met his Canadian-born wife in Australia and in 2014, they immigrated to Canada and settled on the West Coast. He soon became friends with Kyle (whose family also owned a brew pub) and Llyod. Over beers, the three budding business owners began seriously talking about establishing their own craft brewery. “We began with the brewery concept but when this space came up in Steveston, we thought that an eatery featuring our beers would really complement each other,” Trystam recalls.
Named after Steveston’s historic Britannia Shipyard, Britannia Brewing Co.’s pays homage to its nautical namesake with blue and white decorative features, lots of blond wood furniture and lantern lighting, which embraces the area's fishing roots that still exist to this day. With a cozy dining room and spacious outdoor patio, the brewpub has quickly become a popular gathering spot for locals.
