Tennis is a great game to help you keep fit while socializing with a friend. Though the local outdoor season is short, there are many courts in Calgary where beginners and diehard players can enjoy a leisurely match or enrol in lessons. Whatever type of tennis player you are, these are some of the best places to fine-tune your topspin.

Calgary Tennis Club

Established in 1889, the Calgary Tennis Club has been a popular racquet-sport spot since frontier times. Its outdoor courts – six hard and three ClayTech – are open to players of all ages. This is a members-only club, but guests can purchase day passes. Throughout the summer, the club offers group programs, kids’ camps, private lessons and family events. The clubhouse kitchen serves breakfast, lunch and snacks.

Riverside Club

Located in Point McKay, The Riverside Club is a full-fledged fitness centre equipped with two indoor soft-surface tennis courts. Its courts are walled, so players can focus on their own match. Don’t have a partner? The facility features a ball machine so you can practice on your own. Members can book courts daily from 7 am to 9:50 pm, while non-members have slightly limited access for a per-day fee. Instructors are available for lessons year round. Kids’ summer camps run July through August.

Stanley Park

As a city-owned, outdoor facility in one of Calgary’s most beautiful green spaces, Stanley Park Tennis Courts are free to the public. Weather permitting, its season runs May through October. The Tennis Academy

Anyone looking to improve their game should head to The Tennis Academy. The sport school’s coaches are certified with Tennis Canada or the International Tennis Federation, and take pride in their students’ achievements. Membership is economically priced, and guests are welcome for a fee. An indoor facility, The Tennis Academy features six courts within its inflatable bubble and four courts and a clubhouse within its permanent building. Ask about the academy’s tennis camps for kids.

Mount Pleasant Tennis Club

With a gate code, Mount Pleasant Tennis Club members can play from sunrise until 10 pm, but guests must purchase a pass during operating hours. The club’s durable asphalt-based Plexipave courts allow players to enjoy an extra-long season. Mount Pleasant operates largely on volunteer power, so membership and daily guest fees are low. The club hosts tournaments, interclub games and social events throughout the summer. Private lessons are available by appointment.

Elbow Park Tennis Club

Osten & Victor Alberta Tennis Centre

This non-profit, community facility features five outdoor courts and eight indoor courts, the latter open year round. All are constructed of cushioned Plexipave, giving players an exceptional on-court experience, and each court has its own viewing area. An onsite fitness centre will help you take your tennis game to the next level. The pro shop offers racquet rentals for drop-in players, and the club offers lessons and group clinics for members. Membership fees are among the lowest in the city.

Calgary Winter Club

Demand for Calgary Winter Club membership is high, but the facilities are definitely worth it. Sign your family up to receive access to six hard-surface indoor tennis courts, professional instructors and a full-service fitness club.
