Christina Kostoff, owner and founder of Yellow House Gallery, trained for years as an artist, but it wasn’t until she was at school in Chicago that she realized her passion for curating. “In Chicago, a lot of people were living together and using their apartments for gallery shows,” she says. “And while I was there, I started holding these apartment showings and discovered that I loved curating as much as creating.”
So when Christina came back to Toronto, she started thinking about how to blend her love of new and exciting art with a framing shop that welcomed the public, just as her shows did back in Chicago. She decided that a combination custom frame shop and art gallery would be best, a place where people could come and get anything framed and also see something that was interesting and artistic.
“People come to a framing shop to frame all sorts of things,” she says. “So I had a vision of a place that has thoughtful exhibitions that are really accessible to the neighbourhood. My store is a framing shop that’s well-curated – a commercial operation – but one that embraces different practices and experimental work.”
