It's easy to see why Emin Kocacinar describes Mersin Mediterranean Cuisine as his "second family."
For one thing, his first family works there. Emin's wife, Seher, heads up the kitchen. Then there's the fact that the restaurant is named after the city on Turkey's Mediterranean coast from which the Kocacinar family hails. Mersin's 2011 departure from downtown Toronto was even family-driven, Emin says, as the current location, on Bloor Street West, between the Keele and Dundas West subway stations, is a short walk from their home and the schools their three children attend.
But the family feel is most evident in the care the Kocacinars take in everything from the delicious and healthy Turkish fare to the authentic decor and warm, speedy service.
"Anyone can say they care about their customers, but we prefer to show them," Emin says. "If someone orders takeout and we're really busy, everyone lends a hand to make sure the food gets there quickly. Many times, I've jumped behind the wheel to help with deliveries. It's not my job, but with a family business everything is your job."
