Nestled amid a cluster of condominiums in Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood, Fruitful Market offers nearby residents organic produce and fresh meals that won’t break the bank.
From seasonal fruits and vegetables to organic salads and cheese to hot brewed coffee, Fruitful Market has something for every type of customer, whether you’re looking to pick up some ingredients for dinner or grab a sandwich to go. “One of the key things we offer is good-quality, basic, fresh foods,” says owner Yannis Banks. “Whether, you just need a bunch of bananas or milk, I think people really like having that close by.”
And when it comes to choosing what to stock and sell at Fruitful Market, Yannis says he follows a simple rule: “My guiding principle is to do stuff that I would like to eat or buy myself.” The end result is high-quality organic produce and nutrient-dense food, showcased in a modern setting.
Yannis’ passion for organic foods likely came during a previous stint working on an organic fertilizer project. This eventually led him to study organic and biological agriculture. “I just became more and more fascinated with organic agriculture, and very much wanted to be a part of that world,” he said. “Living in a city, I thought the best way to do that was to open a place like Fruitful.”
