“I’ve been riding safely for over 10 years,” says Lee, co-owner of 1st Gear Motorcycle School & Training, “and I want my students to be riding safely for that long or longer.” For Lee and his partner Lionel, fun is a big part of riding a motorcycle, but safety is the number one thing.
“You don’t even really need a motorcycle license to buy a very powerful motorcycle and ride it, with no training at all,” Lee says, clearly worried at the prospect, “and all you need to wear is a helmet and you’re considered legal. It’s putting your life on the line.” Lee and his staff’s expert training stress the importance of safety when it comes to equipment, technique and behaviour.
“We’re very exposed and vulnerable out there,” he says, “so the more we protect each other, the better.”
